How to source, upload, organise and play audio and visual effects in a Roblox game without the usual silent failures. The lessons come from several shipped prototypes, mainly a kids' strategy tycoon with about 50 sounds and 60 particle templates.

File What it covers
sound-sourcing-and-upload.md Where to get SFX legally, loudness prep, uploading under the group, "not approved" fallbacks
sound-registry.md One registry with groups, voices, cooldowns, ducking, supersedes; the common sound bugs
music-and-ambience.md Composed music over generative, ambience beds per state, battle intensity bed
vfx-particles.md Particles not parts, layered explosions, smoke colour under a tinted sky
fx-pooling-and-budgets.md One FX controller, templates in ReplicatedStorage, pooling with generation counters, quality budgets
feedback-juice.md Sound + burst + float text for every important action; one owner per moment
CHECKLIST.md Pre-ship checklist for audio and effects
snippets/SoundRegistry.luau Generic registry + player (groups, voices, cooldown, supersedes, loud warnings)
snippets/FXPool.luau Pooled template player with a generation counter and quality budgets
snippets/Feedback.luau Feedback.moment(kind, pos, text): one sound, one burst, one float per event
tools/prep_sfx.py Trim, loudness-normalise per group, limit, fade or seamless-loop, encode .ogg

The five lessons that matter most

  1. Upload audio as the group that owns the game. Audio uploaded to a personal account plays as silence in a group game, or shows "not approved". Keep the previous working id in the registry until the new one is verified to load.
  2. One registry, one owner per moment. Every sound is called by name from one config. Stingers (victory/defeat) live outside the Music group so a muted-music player still hears them. supersedes stops two reward sounds stacking on the same frame. Unknown names must warn loudly, not return silently.
  3. Stop loops when the thing dies, not when it is unloaded. A destroyed vehicle kept its engine loop running for the rest of the battle because the loop was only stopped on model swap.
  4. Effects are particles, never part clusters. The developer rejected 3D ball-cluster "puff" explosions outright. Fix flat effects with layered emitters, colour ramps and opaque soft smoke, not geometry.
  5. Pooled effects need a generation counter. Without it, a delayed release from an effect's previous use parks the new effect mid-play. Stamp rec.gen += 1 on acquire and check it in every timer and handle.
  • Asset permissions: audio owned by another creator loads as silence with no error, so probe ids before wiring them in (see the assets/uploading guide in this repo, if present).
  • UI sounds for buttons belong in the same registry as everything else (UI group).
