Getting Roblox avatars right
Proportions, the two body types, why blocky arms have no hands, and the flat printed face.

Nothing gives away an off-brand thumbnail faster than characters that aren't quite Roblox. These are the specific things that go wrong, whether you're rendering, painting or prompting an image model.
Tall and slim, not squat
A Roblox avatar is about three times taller than it is wide. Arms and legs are long rectangular prisms, each about as long as the torso is tall. The head is a small block roughly the width of the torso, never bigger. Short stubby limbs, a wide body and a big round head is a toy minifigure, not Roblox.
Two body types; never mix them
| Classic blocky | Rounded | |
|---|---|---|
| Arms | One straight prism, uniform width | Segmented, softly rounded |
| Hands | None. The arm ends in a flat square face | A simple rounded hand, no separate fingers |
| Legs and feet | Prisms ending flat, no foot part | A separate simple shoe or foot shape |
The single most common mistake is a hand on a blocky arm. If the arms are hard rectangular prisms, they end. If the scene needs visible hands, build the whole character as the rounded type so the body stays consistent.
When someone asks for "hands on his head" on a blocky avatar, it means the ends of the arms go on the head. Move the arm blocks there and keep the face toward the camera. Never turn the character away to avoid drawing hands.
The face is printed, not sculpted
The face is a flat graphic printed on the front of the head: two simple eyes and one simple mouth, drawn on the surface. Sculpted 3D eyeballs, eyelids, brow ridges, teeth, a tongue or a modelled nose are the fastest way to stop looking like Roblox. This holds even in a "realistic" style: gear and clothing can be hyper-detailed, the face never is.
Other tells
- Hair is one solid moulded shell with a clean edge, never strands or flowing locks.
- Cloth doesn't drape, wrinkle or hang like real fabric; clothing is printed onto the blocks.
- Edges stay crisp. Rounding every head and limb into soft pillows reads as a generic 3D character, not a Roblox one.
- Bold colour blocking, not muted everyday outfits.
Studs are flat
A Roblox stud is a flat circular pattern printed on a smooth part, sitting flush with it. It is never a raised knob or peg. Raised knobs on a baseplate turn a Roblox scene into a toy-brick scene instantly.
